But first … what are cookies?

Cookies are files or data packages that can be saved on the user's computer (or other device enabled to surf the internet, for example, smartphone or tablet) when visiting a website. Usually a cookie contains the name of the internet site from which the cookie comes from, the duration of the cookie (to be precise, the indication of time for which the cookie will remain stored on the device), and a content (number, string, etc.) , which allows it to perform its function.

What are cookies used for?

Cookies are used to make navigation easier and to better adapt the website to the user's needs. Cookies can also be used to help speed up future user experiences and activities on other websites, and to compile anonymous aggregate statistics that can help understand how users use the sites to improve the structure and the contents of these sites.

The different types of cookies

Technical Cookies are cookies used to browse or provide a service requested by the user. They are not used for further purposes and are normally installed directly by the website manager of that is browsing. Without the use of these cookies, some operations could not be performed or would be more complex and / or less secure, (for example cookies that allow users to execute and maintain the user's identification during the session).

Profiling Cookies are used to track users’ browsing on the web and create profiles on their tastes, habits, choices, etc. With these cookies, advertising messages can be transmitted to the user's terminal in line with the preferences already expressed by the same user in the online navigation.

First-party Cookies are the cookies generated and used directly by the website manager on which the user is browsing.

Third-party Cookies are cookies generated and managed by parties other than the management hours of the website on which the user is browsing (in force, as a rule, of a contract between the website owner and the third party)

Session Cookies and Persistent Cookies. While the difference between a first-party cookie and a third-party cookie concerns the subject that controls the initial sending of the cookie on your device, the difference between a session cookie and a persistent cookie concerns the different time frame for which a cookie works. Session cookies are cookies that typically last as long as you close your internet browser. When you finish your browser session, the cookie expires. Persistent cookies, as the same name indicates, are constant cookies and continue to operate after you have closed your browser.

How can I manage my browser's cookies?

All modern browsers offer the possibility to control the privacy settings, even for what concerns the use of cookies. In particular, the user can operate on the general behavior of the browser against cookies (for example telling to NOT accept them in the future), view and / or delete cookies already installed. Here are the procedures for accessing these settings for the most used browsers:

Chrome

Internet Explorer

Firefox

Opera

Safari 6/7

Safari 8

Safari mobile
